The packaging for the Eclipse lamp, inspired by a pizza box
The lamp can be adjusted to form different shapes

Mauricio Klabin designed the nautilus-shaped Eclipse lamp in 1982. Comprised of a single band of polypropylene attached to a steel frame, the lamp unfolds to alter the orientation of the light and can be adjusted to rest in several positions. The piece folds flat for storage and is delivered in a pizza-like box. It is currently part of the permanent Design and Architecture collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

With a degree in mechanical engineering, Klabin (1952 – 2000) was motivated to create practical, economically viable design solutions. But his creations are not without elements of humor. He introduced a telephone booth in the form of a giant ear, a chair representing a kiss – in which the act of sitting creates the sensation of being embraced - or a fruit bowl inspired by a photograph of women lying on a Rio de Janeiro beach. Klabin also produced hand gliders and his flying device design was inspired by his hero Leonardo da Vinci.

We wish you a joyous holiday season as your new year unfolds!
