Fernando Mendes's work is the result of artisanal production, revealing an author concerned with establishing a dialogue between tradition and modernity, between respect for time-honored construction techniques, which he masters, and the audacity of conception, which he practices by choice. The use of joinery and the excellence of the finish are evidence of this, not to mention the work of sanding all his pieces by hand. Self-identified as a designer woodworker, or artisan, Fernando Mendes confesses: "the very practice of carpentry inspires me." Excerpt from a text by Zuenir Ventura, writer and journalist, member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, and former professor at ESDI (School of Industrial Design). #fernandomendes #coffeetable #woodwork #espasso #interiordesign #design #homedecor #interiordecor #style #architecture #interiordesigner #furniture #inspiration #designer #braziliandesign #modernfurniture #contemporarydesign #collectibledesign #minimalist #archdaily #architecturelovers #midcenturystyle #midcenturydesign #modern #architectural #architecturedaily #architecturelover

Originally designed in the 1960s, the octagonal 'Petalas' coffee table was inspired by the folded paper structures of origami, and originally reutilized the leftover pieces from another of Zalszupin's table, the Andorinha, for its fabrication. With elegant curved wood making up its minimal and striking form, the Petalas is a Brazilian mid-century classic reissued for the first time since its original launch. - Reissued by Etel - Made to Order #petalas #coffeetable #jorgezalszupin #espasso #interiordesign #design #homedecor #interiordecor #style #architecture #interiordesigner #furniture #inspiration #designer #braziliandesign #modernfurniture #contemporarydesign #collectibledesign #minimalist #archdaily #architecturelovers #midcenturystyle #midcenturydesign #modern #architectural #architecturedaily #architecturelover
This collection of ceramic lamps by @arthurcasasdesign explores a dialogue between light, form and matter, and is part of the @studioobjeto collection. Here, the architect plays with organic forms reminiscent of pebbles, exaggerating their expressiveness, as if they were asymmetrically inflated balloons. Pictured here are the Guitarra, Corno, Breaco and Gallina designs. Gridded in design, this coffee table is handmade from freijó wood, with its natural color is chosen for its outermost side, a dark stained version for the inside, requiring precise execution in finishing and joining. Two movable steel plates are also featured, which allow adaptability in its surface. Self-taught and guided by curiosity, Etel Carmona began her journey in the 1980s by restoring antique furniture at her rural home in São Paulo. As she stripped away layers of paint and varnish, she uncovered extraordinary native woods and masterful craftsmanship, sparking a lasting devotion. From that moment on, she came to see Brazilian woods as precious materials—treasures that must be respected, protected, and celebrated. Her work draws on time-honored joinery methods, deliberately left exposed to reveal the elegance of finger joints and dovetails. For Etel, meticulous construction and endurance evoke memory and continuity, grounding contemporary design in the deep roots of Brazilian furniture-making. In 1985, she founded ETEL, a company dedicated to producing furniture by leading designers and artists, and uniquely committed to reissuing Brazilian modernist pieces, safeguarding an essential design heritage. #etelcarmona #etel #espasso #interiordesign #design #homedecor #interiordecor #style #architecture #interiordesigner #furniture #inspiration #designer #braziliandesign #modernfurniture #contemporarydesign #collectibledesign #minimalist #midcenturyfurniture #archdaily #architecturelovers #midcenturystyle #midcenturydesign #modern #architectural #architecturedaily #architecturelover
In honor of São Paulo’s 472nd anniversary this Sunday, we’re celebrating the city’s modernist legacy by highlighting five design landmarks that continue to shape its cultural and architectural identity: spaces where architecture, culture, and daily life intersect. Rooted in a strong collective vision, these projects embrace the integration of nature, architecture, art, and urbanism, offering places of refuge, creativity, and community. Together, they present a vision of megacities that blend Brazilian tropical soul with modernism, while remaining deeply grounded in social connection.
